Visiting Waikoloa on the Big Island of Hawaii? Consider Ananaeho’omalu (A Bay) Beach for Portraits.

Waikoloa is an oasis nestled amongst the Big Island’s vast lava fields. In the heart of that oasis you’ll find Anaeho’omalu Bay, also known as A Bay. If you’re staying in the area, this is often the beach that I’ll recommend we meet up at for a portrait shoot. Here we have palm trees, green backdrops, lava backdrops, white sandy, and gorgeous sunsets. I like to provide a lot of variety in my shoots, so we’ll start at the public beach entrance. After saying hi, I’ll strap on my gear and we’ll walk down the beach, past the Lava Lava Beach club (where you are welcome to have dinner after our shoot if you’d like!). As the sun sinks, you can listen to live music and enjoy the ambiance of swaying palm trees and good food. 

My portrait shoots are generally 45 minutes to 1 hour, and in this time we can get quite a few different backdrops. I give you all of the good images from our shoot (I say 30+ just in case it takes a while to get small children warmed up, but I usually deliver 50-90 images in a regular shoot). To get this number of images, I like to shoot as we go. There are places where you’ll need shoes, and also places where you may want to walk barefoot on the sand (and even end up wading in the water at sunset!). I like to get a green backdrop, a beach backdrop, some lava rocks, some palm trees and of course . . . the grand finale of the sky at sunset. Bring a small bag to keep your phones, keys, etc. in so we can just keep setting it down on the side as we move down the beach in the various locations. 

Here are a few of my recent Waikoloa shoots. I recommend light or bright colors that will stand out against the black lava rock (black can camouflage with the lava a bit, but if that’s your pick I can work with it!).
