Holualoa Inn Wedding: Kaelynn & David’s Intimate Big Island Celebration
Photos and article by Laura Pittman, boutique Big Island wedding photographer — www.laurapittmanphotography.com
There’s a moment in every wedding day when I stop looking through the camera and just watch. For Kaelynn and David, that moment came somewhere between the art garden and the altar — when David caught sight of Kaelynn and his whole face changed. That’s the kind of love this Holualoa Inn wedding was built around: young, unguarded, and completely certain.
If you’re searching for a Kona, Hawaii wedding venue for an intimate celebration, elopement, or small guest-list wedding on the Big Island, Kaelynn and David’s day is a perfect example of why Holualoa Inn belongs at the top of your list — and why I’d love to be the photographer who walks it with you.
Why Holualoa Inn Is One of the Best Wedding Venues on the Big Island
Tucked into the coffee-farm slopes of Mount Hualalai above Kona, Holualoa Inn is a 30-acre private estate that pairs upcountry seclusion with sweeping views of the Kona coastline. It’s both a boutique bed and breakfast and a full event venue, which means couples can host everything — getting ready, ceremony, reception, and an overnight stay — without ever leaving the property.
For couples planning an elopement or intimate wedding on the Big Island, that combination is rare. Most oceanfront venues in Kona require you to shuttle between hotel, ceremony site, and reception space. At Holualoa Inn, the whole story happens in one place, which gives the day a slower, more connected feeling — and gives photos a real sense of continuity from morning light to sunset toasts.
The Art Garden: Holualoa Inn’s Most Photogenic Secret
Ask anyone who has walked Holualoa Inn’s grounds and they’ll tell you the same thing: nothing prepares you for the art garden. Winding paths lead guests past hand-carved sculptures, oversized butterfly wing installations perfect for portraits, a giant bell tucked into the greenery, and even a rock maze framed by dense tropical foliage.
The art garden gave me an entire portrait session’s worth of textures and light without ever leaving the estate. If you’re a couple who wants your Big Island wedding photos to feel like they belong in a botanical gallery rather than a standard beach ceremony, this is exactly the kind of detail that sets Holualoa Inn apart from other Kona wedding venues.
Kaelynn and David chose to have their first look down at the art garden, complete with a touching foot-washing ceremony, symbolizing a life of love and service to each other, forever.
An Intimate Wedding, Done Right
Kaelynn and David kept their guest list small — close family and friends from both sides, gathered in one of the few places on the island where an intimate wedding still feels expansive. Holualoa Inn’s layout is built for this: the Red Barn and main Inn offer a relaxed, private space for a small guest list to get ready and mingle, while the Malulani Pavilion and Great Lawn — shaded by a sprawling monkeypod tree — give ceremonies a sense of scale despite a short guest list.
Their rings told the same story as the day itself: so beautiful and unique, and clearly chosen with intention rather than tradition for tradition’s sake. Kaelynn and David surprised each other with these gorgeous rings.
A Peaceful Presence on Your Wedding Day
This is where I think boutique photography earns its name. On a day this small and this personal, you don’t need a photographer barking directions or treating your wedding like a production schedule. You need someone who feels like part of the day itself.
With Kaelynn and David, that meant that I was buckling shoes and fixing stray hairs. It meant staying low-key enough that guests forgot a camera was even in the room, so the moments I caught were real ones — David’s face when Kaelynn walked toward him, not a posed version of it.
That’s the whole philosophy behind my work: joyful, timeless, authentic photography, delivered by someone who’s as invested in your peace of mind as your photo gallery. I’m not there to direct your wedding. I’m there to protect it — to step up when needed, but step back when not . . . and I make sure you look and feel your best while I do.
Two Families, One Celebration
The ceremony was heartfelt and moving, with genuine love, hope, and faith fully on display. David and Kaelynn vowed their lives to each other with the stunning Kona coast backdrop behind them, and their families and friends gathered on the lawn.
After the ceremony, Kaelynn and David and I took photos around the art garden, which is a spectacular background for a photo shoot, before heading back up to the reception area. The wings were a highlight, don’t you agree?
Reception
Holualoa Inn’s reception venue is a covered area directly adjacent to the ceremony lawn. It provided the perfect space for dinner, dancing, and watching the sun sink below the horizon. Absolutely gorgeous!
Planning an Elopement or Intimate Wedding at Holualoa Inn?
Holualoa Inn is exactly the kind of venue I love working in: a place where the setting does half the storytelling before I even raise the camera. The art garden alone gives a full day of visual variety, and the ocean-view backdrop means every hour of light — morning, midday, or golden hour — has something to offer.
If you’re planning an elopement, micro-wedding, or intimate celebration in Kona or anywhere on the Big Island, I’d love to talk with you about your day. Holualoa Inn is at the top of my list of favorite Hawaii wedding venues, and as a boutique photographer, I only take on a limited number of weddings each season — which means the couples I work with get my full presence, not a rushed shot list.
